Google Business Profile FAQ

Google announced in 2021 that the name Google My Business would change to Google Business Profile. A Google Business Profile is another useful way for businesses to reach new customers based in your local area. Listings appear in Google Maps, whilst it’s helpful to appear in the ‘local pack’ which is typically the top three local results. After the local pack, come the organic search results that you are used to seeing when searching for something on Google.

Log into your account, then go to the Edit profile section. From there, head to the Business name section. Click on the edit (pencil) symbol, type in your new business name, and then click done. A note of caution: changing the name in your listing can trigger an automatic suspension. If your account gets suspended there is a process of reinstatement to follow, which will include providing Google with proof that the name you added to your listing is the name of your business.

Adding keywords to your business name has been known to have a positive impact in improving local pack rankings. However, a note of caution: inserting keywords to your listing name can trigger a suspension. If you don’t want to take the risk, then keep your GBP listing name the same as your actual business name, eg, John Smith Plumbing Services.

It makes sense to complete every section of your listing. Though this won’t bring a rankings boost, it helps to provide a fuller picture of your business and services to potential customers. Remember to complete your business description, and post updates about your business, such as a new service or special offer, and to add Q&A too. A critical part of your listing (for local ranking purposes) is your primary category (eg plumber) followed by your secondary categories (eg, gas fitter). Lastly, begin collecting reviews.

You can add your business to multiple locations by logging into your Google business account and clicking "manage now". Then search for the tab "add business" and hit the button "add single business" by following the drop-down prompts. You will then be redirected to the Google My Business setup page, where you must follow the same signup process you did when you first created a profile and verified your account.
